After years of no one knowing what a meerkat was they seem to be rather fashionable now and this delightful tale is a reworking of Aesop's fable about the boy who cried wolf. Milly was on lookout and was rather bored, so she shouted to the others that a snake was crawling up to the baby meerkats' burrow. Everyone dashed out to help her chase it away – and discovered that she thought her prank was quite funny. Even when it was explained to her that she shouldn't do this she did it again – and this time everyone was angry.

Well, you know what's coming next don't you? Large hissing snake heads for the baby meerkats' burrow, but no one reacted. Thankfully the story does have a happy ending and the moral of the story is neatly encapsulated in the phrase nobody believes a liar… even when they're telling the truth. It's an important point for a child to learn, but the point is delivered with a light touch and most importantly there's forgiveness for what Milly did.

The illustrations support the story well – you'll feel all the heat of Africa and the cool of the nights. The meerkats you'll just want to cuddle –even Milly at her naughtiest! The colours pull you into the pictures and they're very easy on the eyes. The text is simple and clear

Many children have problems with telling the truth and this picture book is a lovely way of pointing out the consequences of getting a reputation as a liar. It might not be a book that stays on the favourites' shelf for a long time, but it's still a story which is going to be enjoyed .

I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy to the Bookbag.
