Lucinda Belinda Melinda McCool by Jeanne Willis and Tony Ross

Every so often a book comes along that delights children and caregivers alike, and this is one of them. Lucinda Belinda is extremely beautiful and she feels it's her duty to bring beauty to the world. And if this means telling others to sort out their eyebrows, lose their big behinds, file their nails or just up their grooming generally then so be it.

She sounds charming, doesn't she? I loved this book because she is so mean, and because it flies in the face of all the anti-bullying mafia and political correctness. Of course it's not nice to make fun of other people, and of course it can hurt people's feelings, but this is just a book. A story. Fiction. Not real. And it's funny. And don't worry, Lucinda Belinda gets her comeuppance. The message is there.

This book is full of 'naughty' words and cheeky phrases. Telling someone they have a big bottom is hilarious to this age group, while the note than Grandma (as well as Grandpa) needs her moustache taking care of is definitely one for the parents.

Told entirely in rhyme this story has a wonderful lyrical feel to it.

Katy Carruthers! Good heavens your brows are
As scruffy as any I've seen on a Schnauzer

Abigail Snape? You have ears like an ape!
Keep still while I stick them back neatly with tape

Complementing this are some brilliant, lively pictures that may look a little familiar as they are courtesy of the marvellous Tony Ross, of Horrid Henry and Little Princess fame. I love how, erm, rough this illustration style is. Personally I don't think they make Lucinda Belinda look that beautiful which is part of the fun. She's snooty Miss Snooty, thinking she's all that and a bag of chips, but really she's just a normal little girl with an above average opinion of herself.

I'd like to thank the publishers for sending us a copy to review. It's really fab and gets better every time I read it. For children who are naughty in other ways, the aptly named Children are Naughty by Vincent Cuvellier and Aurelie Guillerey is a recommended pick.
