As a child Agatha Christie and her mother would read a book together every afternoon, but there were early signs of what the future novelist would become: she always had a better idea about how the story should end. She would read in bed at night and detective novels were always her favourites. In the First World War Agatha, who was then in her early twenties, nursed wounded soldiers in hospitals: her experiences with poisons and toxic potions would be put to good use when her first detective novels were published just after the end of the war. Most people have heard of her first and most famous detective - Hercule Poirot - or of Miss Marple. Mrs Christie's novels were widely read and her plays were very popular in theatres.

I've been impressed by Frances Lincoln's Little People, Big Dreams series. They give a basic biography of a woman who started in very ordinary circumstances but who, by her own efforts, achieved much and became famous and they're all pitched at the five to eight year old age group. History has too often been written by men and about men and it's refreshing to see women being brought to the fore. Young girls need role models in every area of achievement, so that they too can be encouraged to make the most of their opportunities. Agatha Christie became the most famous crime writer of all time - and that hasn't changed in the forty years since her death.

All the books are well illustrated. Agatha Christie has a limited palette of black, white and just a touch of red. It's very effective. There's not a lot of text (I've told you most of the story in the first paragraph of this review) but it's in a clear font which would certainly be accessible to the emerging reader: the vocabulary is gently challenging (dastardly deed might need a little explaining...) and I liked the quality of the paper which is substantial enough to prevent any bleed through from the reverse of the page which can confuse a new reader.

The content might not have a long enough shelf life for the home, but the series should be essential for the school library. I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy to the Bookbag.

The other books available in the series are:

Little People, Big Dreams: Coco Chanel by Isabel Sanchez Vegara and Ana Albero
Little People, Big Dreams: Frida Kahlo by Isabel Sanchez Vegara and Eng Gee Fan
Little People, Big Dreams: Amelia Earhart by Isabel Sanchez Vegara and Mariadiamantes
Little People, Big Dreams: Maya Angelou by Lisbeth Kaiser and Leire Salaberria
