This book is a testament to my giant balls. But it's also a lot more. The story we've never been able to discern from either of the Anchorman films is one of surprising hardship, unsurprising hardness, and great hair. It's a rags-to-riches tale, as Ron Burgundy comes from a Hicksville town in the middle of the outskirts of somewhere the arse end of nowhere (a town perpetually on fire due to the accidents in the mines underneath) and struggles against all the odds – and many of the evens in the shape of women's legs – to get where he is today, thrusting himself and his news at us nightly.

It was of course in his blood, as so many things were back in the days. His father sat at his favourite perch in the Tight Manhole pub and proselytised on the town's events, and so it ended up, like you-know-what in Ibsen's Ghosts, in a second generation, as Ron became a huge star in the world of reading an autocue, emoting suitably, and making housewives moist at the knees.

Ron Burgundy, make no mistake, is a great big anchor.

And he also, according to the agent of the book reviewing gods, 'looks like a 70s porn star on the front'. Yes, that's the joke, and it's not a subtle one. There are lots of unsubtle jokes here, about the implausibility of every jazz maestro hitting on the small town Ron grew up in, all his schoolmates having names slightly too similar to the Star Wars cast list, and Mexicans, but dammit it's mostly a well-sustained joke. The voice of whoever wrote this tie-in book has successfully captured that of the smart-suited Ron, and it provides all the single entendres, non sequiturs and head-shakingly bad puns and situations one would expect.

So in the end we can ignore the woollier parts, the less successful gags and skits, and so on, and just sit back in the rich, distinctive Burgundy voice, until he, as only he can, lets us join him in his affirming, classy climax.

I must thank the publishers for my review copy.

For another archly humorous read - this time in the world of books - we loved The Best Book in the World by Peter Stjernstrom and Rod Bradbury (translator).
