Kave-Tina Rox lives with her Mug, Pug and brother Dave-Kave in a cave. Her Mug tries to brush her hair and make her look pretty, but Kave-Tina's having none of it. When the Caveman Games come to town, Dave-Kave doesn't let her join in with any of the games, because she's just a girl, but Kave-Tina's having none of it. She shows she's perfectly capable of joining in, and indeed of doing it better than Dave-Kave and his mates.

All that makes Kave-Tina Rox sound like some annoying sub-Spice Girls girls are good really book, but it's not at all. It's just a fun tale of a family in prehistoric times with a strong central character. Kave-Tina just knows she doesn't like having her hair brushed (who does?) and is fully aware of her own wide-ranging abilities. It's great to see her proving her snotty brother wrong, even coming to his rescue.

Sam Childs' illustrations are great: the drawn scruffy cavekids and mammoths look exactly as you'd expect them to do. Kave-Tina's hair in particular does so much to establish her character. There's a wonderful mix with the dinosaurs, which are done in a collage style. Everything's all very exciting, with plenty of prehistoric shennanigans to pore over.

The story is interesting enough to interest picture book fans of all ages; the vocabulary is similarly accessibly to all, without being either too simplistic or too challenging. The target audience is girls wanting a strong, positive role model, but there's nothing that excludes boys. It's a delightful read that you'd do well to check out. Recommended.

My thanks to the publishers for sending it to Bookbag.

If they're into prehistoric times, but prefer slightly more factual detail, then Stone Age Boy by Satoshi Kitamura is worth a look (despite my initially not entirely positive review). Girls with big messy hair will enjoy The Girl With The Bird's Nest Hair by Sarah Dyer.
