The baby blue egg came out to play one day:

First came one leg…
then came another…
then it yelled,
I want my mother!

It's the shouting that worries all the other animals.

Oh please don't wake the scary thing!

But it's too late, of course for the scary thing is well and truly awake, and boy, is she frightening. The other animals have some advice for the little egg:

Run for cover!
Run for cover!
Run, little egg, and find your mother!

Well, little egg might only have little legs but he ran as fast as he could and you have just got to go and see the route that he takes, over fallen trees, jumping over rocks and even using a hippo as a stepping stone. Finally he found somewhere safe to hide, under something yellow. This turned out to be spiny fellow and he was worried that the noise would wake, well, by now you can guess who. Before you dash out to find somewhere safer to hide do have a look at the cave drawings – there's even a game of noughts and crosses.

I think you might have got the idea by now. All the animals are rather frightened that the scary thing is going to be woken by the noise that the little blue egg is making and all the egg can do is run away and hide. The scary thing is on the rampage and she's creating havoc.

It's a delightful story which demonstrates that things are not always as they seem and that it pays to get to know the facts before you make a judgement. I'm not going to tell you how the story ends – although you can probably guess – but any pre-school child is going to love getting caught up in the chase. Reading the story aloud is a joy – it really scans and the rhymes are a delight. I found myself grinning as I read.

The illustrations by Mary McQuillan complement the text perfectly. They're superficially simple, but I found all sorts of hidden extras and there's a lot to discuss. Definitely recommended!

I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy to The Bookbag.

For another story where things are not quite as they seem have a look at our review of Here Come the Aliens! by Colin McNaughton. If eggs take your interest then we can recommend The Odd Egg by Emily Gravett.

This book was originally published as a hardback under the title of Baby Blue Egg.
