Is there anyone who looks forward to the potty training stage? No, I didn't think so. I'm there again at the moment with my little boy. Everyone delights in telling me how boys are a lot harder to train than girls. So far they're right! I was hopeful that this book might help things along a little but, sadly, it succeeded only in making all of us laugh (and left us hoping that our small boy didn't get any naughty ideas from it!)

In the story we are introduced to a small bear called Alan (I'm already liking this story!) Alan and his friends are at a fun fair, and although Alan needs a wee, getting him to the toilet whilst passing many, many interesting things on the way is going to prove very difficult. Those of you familiar with toddlers will already be well aware of their goldfish attention spans, and Alan is no different in finding himself immediately sidelined by balloons and cake. Even once the toilets are in sight, the queue is so very long that Alan doesn't think he can possibly wait! So they're back on the hunt again for an alternative location for a wee-wee. This is where I began to feel a little concerned, whilst Alan wonders if he could wee in a tea pot, or wee in someone's top hat!

In the end, after finding himself on stage dancing the 'i need a wee really badly' jig he wins a prize cup. Guess where he does his wee? Oh yes, yes he does, he wees in the cup! (Luckily we're not a prize-winning household, so no large trophy cups here for anyone to relieve themselves in!) Alan is so very relieved, but that's not the end of the wee, since he and his friends are soon off for a ride on a ferris wheel, and they're all shouting out 'weeeeeeeeeeee!' as they go around!

The illustrations are very bright and colourful, and Alan and his friends are endearing little characters. One of my favourite pictures is of the queue outside the toilets, where there is a motley assortment of characters all doing that wonderful 'i need a wee' expression! There's plenty of fun through the words too, and we all like the part where we get to shout I need a wee very loudly! It's a simple, but easy to follow tale and, as I said, my only concern was that my little one would be looking out for alternative receptacles for his wee wee to go in after reading this, but fortunately he seems quite content with the toilet!

Great fun for potty-trainees, and those who have graduated to big boy pants already.
