Summary: Dark sequel developing the Voices world in gory detail. Todd once more excels at building up an incredibly vivid post-apocalyptic world and introduces new characters' arcs to add depth to the plot. A fast paced second half makes the novel exciting and one which I would recommend.

Do you not sometimes think a storm is coming?

Hunted continues where the Voices series left off, with our heroine on the run without anyone to defend her whilst the world around her is descending into chaos.

Lacey, barely escaped with her life after the events of Defender and now she's being hunted. By a boy driven by a voice stealing away his sanity piece by piece and by another incapable of speech. Both are determined to find her at all costs and both are building up an army of followers to track her precise location before the other.

For Albus she is the key to finding his sister and finishing the work she began. The Other, however, is desperate to enact his revenge and make her suffer. As the race against time begins, there is no way of knowing who will find her first; loyalties will be tested, lives will be lost, fatal decisions will be forced into plans, and the fate of humanity will be irrevocably changed for better or for worse.

G X Todd's debut was one of the best books I read last year; it was incredibly powerful and very poignant, so if you haven't read it yet then I implore you to read it next. It'll transport you to a frightening future that will stay in your mind for a long time after you've put it down. It's messages, the style of writing and story line make it a fantastic read that everyone should definitely try.

Hunted, the sequel, is very good, about that there is no doubt. It still revolves around the scary idea of hearing voices and being controlled with vivid graphic violent acts thrown in and the determined survival of mankind. It builds on these strikingly, giving Todd's world extra layers which you won't be able to stop thinking about even after you've set the book down.

But whilst I did really enjoy it, was it as good as the first one? In my opinion, no. But it depends on your reading preference - I've read reviews of those who loved it even better than the first book and I've seen others which have felt similar to me. So if you're doubting whether to jump back into the Voices world, I would definitely recommend picking the sequel up, it is still a great read - particularly throughout the second half.

Hunted is a slightly different style of book: there are more character introductions at the beginning, and it's a while before we catch up with Lacey on the run. There is also more framework developed during the first third of the novel, making it great to dive into the minds of others living in the new future and to explore how their lives have changed. But for me, I didn't connect with the new characters automatically and so the book dragged during that first third. It was a while before all the characters became connected and that was really when the real action started and when I could finally connect with the new personalities and their place within the story. It was a real turning point and if you struggle with it, like me, then it is well worth it because everything suddenly falls very neatly into place.

By far the best stand out feature of the book as with the first in the series was the world building and just how easily Todd immerses the reader in her world. When the action started it was relentless and I could not read the pages fast enough. Her descriptive narrative is highly impressive and makes you feel like you're actually there inside the book - I won't lie: it's slightly terrifying. I loved being reunited with Lacey, she really made an impression on me in the first book, and so I was really looking forward to getting to know how the events of the previous book had shaped her and I wasn't disappointed. She's still just as brilliant as she was and I couldn't have asked for more for her character (aside from her having a few more chapters - she's my favourite narrative - I can't help it!). The second half was fantastically executed with enough tension to drown in - I loved it and I cannot overestimate just how quickly I read those last chapters - read it and you'll understand without question.

Many thanks to the publishers for providing us with a copy for review.

A haunting spine chilling sequel which opens up Todd's post-apocalyptic world further. With horror elements around every corner, Todd's writing will transport readers into her syntilating world.

In terms of further reading, why not try The Dying Game by Asa Avdic? It's fast, it's unpredictable and a very enjoyable read. If, however, you're in the mood for something darker, look no further than The Chalk Man by C J Tudor a chilling thriller that is definitely one to read.
