A relentless battle. Human against dragon. On the Doomsday of Yule, the battle will end and only one side can be victorious. If the dragons win, the human race will be annihilated. If the humans win, they will unlock the secret of the dragon jewel, with the potential to destroy all of the dragons. The only hope is a human boy called Hiccup, an unlikely hero who has a wish to unite human and dragon once more. Unfortunately, Hiccup is lying unconscious on a beach at Hero's End, lost and alone with no boat. What is more, Hiccup has no memory; no idea who he is and why he is so important. He also has two poisonous fangs embedded in his arm; the ticking teeth of a Vampire Spydragon which serve as a tracking device for the vicious beast, who is closing in as we speak. Suffice to say, things aren't going well for Hiccup and they can only get worse...

How to Fight a Dragon's Fury is the 12th and final instalment of the popular How to Train Your Dragon series, which has seen young Hiccup develop from an awkward pre-teen into a confident young man. From the beginning, we are thrown into the heart of the action, as the indomitable Dragon Furious seeks to destroy Hiccup before he can be crowned king. The pace is relentless and plot twists and turns come thick and fast in this exhilarating tale.

There are plenty of revelations in the book to delight and surprise loyal readers. The secret of the jewel is finally revealed and in another plot-line, Hiccup's best friend Fishlegs discovers something about his family that he really wishes had been kept hidden. Heroes are forged, fates are sealed, villains are exposed. The storyline is a real roller-coaster ride and just when we think things have been resolved, it throws us headlong down another plummeting drop.

The dragons, of course, are the stars of the show and never disappoint. Toothless is as loyal and adorable as ever, Hogfly is completely oblivious to the chaos and Wodensfang is wise and faithful. The terrifying Dragon Furious looms large over proceedings and cuts an imposing figure. Each dragon is a tribute to the wonderfully creative imagination of the author.

Many will be sad that the series has finally come to an end and the Epilogue is touching and poignant, bringing things full circle to the first line of the first book: There were dragons when I was a boy.

The book works as a standalone novel, but readers may wish to read the previous books in the series, such as the excellent How to Betray a Dragon's Hero. You might also enjoy The Wizards of Once by Cressida Cowell and King Flashypants and the Evil Emperor by Andy Riley, although we did have some reservations about that last one..
