Horrid Henry isn’t always horrid. Did you know that? Sometimes he tries hard but someone still comes along to out-do him. Like goody two shoes Perfect Peter. With Mothers’ Day around the corner, Horrid Henry is determined to up his game, shame his brother and show he’s the best son. Yeah, I know. Even when he’s trying to be nice he’s being a little horrid, really, but still. It’s the thought that counts.

The thing is…Horrid Henry has left it a bit late and with little time to save his pennies or go to the shops, he’s in a bit of a pickle. Is there anything he can do to win his newly thought up best son competition?

This book is so much fun because every time Horrid Henry thinks up a new solution to his problem, he is thwarted. It’s like watching a car crash in slow motion, with the reader able to see the inevitable outcome even before the driver can. Again and again Horrid Henry tries and again and again he either makes a dodgy decision or is out of luck. Fans of Henry will be pleased to know he’s not a fully reformed character. He prioritises treats for himself over a gift for his mother, pinches pennies wherever he can, and somewhat misses the point with his final gift when he tries to answer the question of what mothers like best.

This is an early reader, making it a good first story book for reading alone. I like the way the text is a mix of both full sentences and shorter, stubbier comments or observations. Adult books often use this approach nowadays, so why shouldn’t children’s ones? The writing is big and easy to read, and the pictures are lively so it’s an inviting read.

This is a lovely book for boys (and girls) whether horrid (or not) because it’s very entertaining and silly in a whimsical way. Highly recommended.

I’d like to thank the publishers for supplying this book.

Horrid Henry's Thank You Letter is another fun early reader, while Horrid Henry's Biggest and Best Ever Joke Book has more from Horrid Henry in a different format. We've also enjoyed Horrid Henry's Tricky Tricks by Francesca Simon.
