Packed into this sturdy sixteen-page board book you'll find a fun way for toddlers to develop colour and shape recognition. In Go! the theme is transport and you'll see the yellow blade of the digger becomes the sail on a boat as the book is opened. Similarly a circle of a bicycle wheel becomes a balloon as the page is turned over. The blue square of a train cab becomes the purple body of a lorry. The yellow rectangle of a bus becomes the red body of a pull-truck. I'm sure that you get the picture!

It's a useful book for the slightly older toddler, who is learning to recognise shapes as well as colours. The shapes are die-cut and with no sharp edges - but the card is top quality and will stand a lot of handling by toddlers for whom touch is still a major part of recognition. The book is sturdy enough for unsupervised handling - this is NOT a 'precious' book which needs to be kept on Mummy's shelf. Children will be attracted to it too: the colours are bright but not too startling and the shapes clear and inviting. And best of all it's a size which sits comfortably in a toddler's hands without needing any other support.

We've also seen Yum! in the same series. The concept is the same - with the shapes being converted into food. The crescent shape is introduced - and converted into bananas and segments of oranges. Go! will definitely appeal to the young train driver in your life and Yum! will be enjoyed by any child who has ever fancied an ice cream. I'd like to thank the publisher for sending a copy of both books to the Bookbag.

Children learning to read will enjoy Ant and Bee by Angela Banner. For an unusual look at shapes we can recommend Monkey Nut by Simon Rickerty.
