The Virals series is the brainchild of talented mother and son co-author team Kathy and Brendan Reichs. It is a clever hybrid of sci fi fantasy thriller and cold case criminology imbued with Reichs’ professional knowledge of forensic anthropology. Complementing her successful series ‘‘Bones’’, which centres around the exploits of astute scientist Temperance Brennan, it stars Tempe’s grandniece Tory Brennan, a feisty and intelligent crusading investigator. Kathy is full of praise for her collaborator, explaining how their ideas synchronise:

He’s very good at knowing what kids say, and how they talk. And he knows a lot about social media and other technology. I’m very good with the science, with the plot twists, and with structuring storylines. Brendan and I complement each other.

This is certainly true as each Virals’ story crackles with tension and excitement. The Reichs are deft at creating new angles and plot twists. In Book 4, after surviving infection by a weaponised virus, perilous pirate treasure hunting and deadly mind games, Tory, Ben, Shelton, Hi and Coop, their loveable wolfdog, take on a devious kidnapper. Following a trail of clues they embark on a perilous path which puts their lives in jeopardy as they risk exposure of their special interconnected lupine powers.

What is so great about the Virals series is that they are meticulously researched and have a real love of location. Readers can map the pack’s adventures around Charleston, South Carolina as they plunge from one action packed scenario to another. One nail biting chase in “Exposure” takes place in the grounds of the popular tourist haunt, the eerie plantation Drayton Hall.

Who can the Virals depend on? Why are they flaring sporadically? Is everything as it seems? What is the role of Candela Pharmaceuticals? How is Tory’s handsome crush Chance involved? As they follow each lead where will the mysterious trail take them and who must they save? Will they always feel like social outsiders at the posh Bolton Prep? Will the tiresome Whitney ever make Tory into a lady? Is their future under threat and can they control their super senses?

For these answers and more enter the troubled world of Exposure. There is something for everyone in the effortless mix of genres and the sassy interaction of the characters. See if you can work out the corkscrew twist before it hits you at the end.

To experience the world of these amazing teens dive in to Virals which will introduce you to the scintillating sci fi plot sprinkled with forensic criminology and social media.
