This is the second in the Everneath trilogy and picks up two months from where the first book finished. Two months ago the Tunnels of the Everneath came to claim Nikki Beckett, to take her back to the Underworld where she would be used as a human battery forever. That night, Nikki's boyfriend, Jack, made the ultimate sacrifice and took Nikki's place in the Everneath. Now, Nikki is haunted by Jack, who appears in her dreams every night, lost, confused and slowly having the life sucked out of him. On the Surface everybody is blaming Nikki for Jack's disappearance; Jack's Mum has hired a Private Detective who's following Nikki around, convinced that she will take him to Jack.

Desperate to get Jack back, Nikki turns to the only person who can help - Cole, the immortal who took Nikki to the Everneath and who wants to see her crowned as the new Queen of the Underworld. Surprisingly, Cole agrees to help Nikki, and together they descend into the heart of Everneath to find the Tunnels where Jack is being held. It's not going to be easy though, as the Everneath is an unpredictable place that feeds off emotions; it's going to be a deadly journey. Nikki vows to do whatever it takes to find Jack and save him from an eternity in the Tunnels, even if it means making another sacrifice.

If it's possible, this book was even better than the first. Usually the second book of a series is full of 'filler' to pad out the plot, however, this book really built on what the first set up. It was riddled with Greek Mythology, which was intriguing and very interesting; it drew from various Greek Myths and wove them effortlessly into its own plot making the Everneath an amazing and vivid background to the story.

At first I did feel frustrated that Nikki wanted to put herself through the turmoil of the Everneath for try and save Jack - I would have picked Cole any day. However, by the end of the book I had completely changed my mind. Threaded through Nikki's journey into the Underworld were memories she had of Jack, and they were so beautiful that I couldn't help but switch to the view point that Jack was completely worth saving. From their first kiss, to the moment she realised she loved him - I know it sounds cheesy, but they really were touching moments and made me understand why Cole would always be second best.

Honestly, if you haven't read Everneath you need to go and get a copy now. If you have, then you need this. Brilliant. How long do I have to wait for the third book?

Thank you to Simon and Schuster for a copy of this amazing book.

If you enjoy books like this then you need to read Matched by Ally Condie as it's fantastic. For another book with a mythological twist try Dead Beautiful by Yvonne Woon, or Need by Carrie Jones. If you like books about love then read the amazing Delirium by Lauren Oliver
