Elephant's Pyjamas by Michelle Robinson and Emily Fox
I've read a lot of stories recently about animals who don't have many friends, at least at the beginning of their tale. For this age group it's pretty much a given that by the last page they'll have lots of lovely companions with whom to spend their days. Elephant is not one of those unlucky souls, though. He has TONS of friends and he's just been invited to a party with all of them. Lucky thing.

There's only one snag. It's a sleepover and as Elephant quickly discovers, his PJs are looking a little worse for wear. Fine for alone at home but not really suitable for public viewing. There's only one thing to do, he'll have to go shopping. But that doesn't work either. It's quite hard to dress an elephant after all. And so, with a heavy heart he has to decline the invitation. Is there anything his friends can do to help him change his mind?
I identified with Elephant. I'm not a PJs person anymore and always panic when I go away with friends, rather than the Boy, that I'll forget my token t-shirt to sleep in. Nightmare. I understood Elephant's dilemma and I must say I was impressed with the lengths he went to to try to solve the problem. Could a table cloth do? How about an old tent? Even a fishing net crosses his mind. The fun attention to detail doesn't stop there. His email comes from Zoogle, for example. How cute is that?
A lot of toddler books are timeless but this ones makes a real effort to bring a 21st century feel to the story, with email invitations, online profiles and so on. Nothing too racy, but things they will no doubt be familiar with, like sitting down at a laptop with a cup of tea and some chocolate biscuits (3, if you're Elephant).
Imaginative, colourful and fun, I enjoyed both the story and the presentation here. It's an easy read with lots of talking points, and of course that aforementioned happy endings still comes through. If Elephant had hands, I'm sure he'd give it two thumbs up.
