There's a big hole in the front of Egg and - curiously - it's egg-shaped. Behind this hole and on every page there's another egg-shaped hole and they get smaller and smaller leaving a neat shape which you could easily balance on egg in. The colours shout SPRING and in case you are in any doubt we're told it's An eggs-citing Easter egg-scapade! You get the idea?
Bunny, Lamb, Puppy, Kitten, Pony and Bluebird all go on an egg hunt and they find them in all sorts of places. Puppy has to dig for his - and Pony finds her egg in the hay. And then, when they gather all the eggs together they hear a cracking sound...
It's a really robust board book with carefully rounded edges and the cut-out egg shape positively invites you to run your fingers around it - even to poke your hand through it. You could even - if you felt very brave - compare the holes to the size of a hen's egg. Don't worry - there'll be no scratches. It's the sort of book which you can leave with a young child without fear - this isn't one of those books which are kept on Mummy's shelf.
The artwork is bright and engaging and the text is a light and bouncy rhyme which pulls the story along. It's mildly educational in that it opens the way for a discussion on where chickens come from but there's nothing too worthy about it. It's simply great good fun.
I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy of the book to the Bookbag.
Slightly older children in search of eggs will love Foxy and Egg by Alex T Smith. Those who've moved on from board books will love The Odd Egg by Emily Gravett. For another classy board book, have a look at Max's Wagon by Barbro Lindgren and Eva Eriksson.
