If you're going camping or caravanning it's not always easy to take your dogs with you.  Some sites don't allow dogs; others have restrictions on breeds, size or number of dogs, whilst others make a charge.  You're then faced with wondering whether there will be somewhere to exercise the dogs and how easy it will be to get rid of the, er, deposits!  ''Dog Friendly Camping and Caravan Sites: Your Comprehensive Guide to Dog Friendly Camping and Caravan Sites'' is an answer to this, but it's nowhere near as comprehensive as the title would suggest.

On the positive side there's a lot of very useful information provided.  As well as the name, address, telephone number of the site and details of any website. Each entry then has the following information:

Extra charge for dogs?

Any breed restrictions?

Dog bins?

Area for walking dogs?

Static caravans?

Cost of static?

Mobile caravans?

Cost of mobile?

Tents?

Cost of tent pitch?

Electricity at the pitch?

Showers?

Onsite entertainment?

Opening times?

There's really all that you need to know there to plan your holiday and if the book was better organised and more comprehensive then I would be recommending it wholeheartedly.  Unfortunately, there are drawbacks.

The sites are grouped by county and the sites listed in alphabetical order, but this isn't a great deal of use if you know where you want to go but not the name of the sites in the area.  If, for instance you wanted to camp near Blackpool you would need to read through all the entries to find the Clifton Fields Caravan Park and any other sites in the area.  An index by town would help.

An even greater disadvantage is that not all counties are covered.  If you want to camp in a county beginning with the letter P or later then you're out of luck and the coverage isn't complete earlier in the alphabet.  I checked for Yorkshire first – and obviously had no luck, but then looked for Northumberland as a friend is planning a trip in the autumn.  There's no entry for Northumberland either.  You'd be wise to check that the area you want to visit is covered before you buy the book.

Not all entries are complete.  In Cambridgeshire, for instance, there are twenty-six sites listed, but the information about dog bins is only supplied for two.
