Night can be a scary time for a child, with shadows playing tricks on the walls and no daylight to make everything seem okay. Do You Speak English, Moon? is a great book for this situation, with a little boy deciding the best thing to do is to talk to the moon. He asks the moon some lovely and magical questions before finally snuggling down and going to sleep. This is an excellent way to try and make the dark just a little less of a fearful place for young children.

The pictures are great, Ben Cort’s illustrations usually are, because they tap in perfectly to a young audience, being both imaginative and friendly as they are. Francesca Simon has a particular way of tapping into children’s thoughts and imaginations which they seem to respond to really well. I’m incredibly happy that she has put her powers to a book for bedtime, rather than the ever-popular bad boy, Horrid Henry. It is really nice to find a quiet book amongst so many loud, brash picture books on the market, and I think the tone of the book overall is incredibly calming.

The whole style and feel of the book is brilliant, and the fact it comes with an audio version only adds to its charm as a bedtime story. This will be a great CD to put on if your child is unsure of night time, or scared of those shadows on the wall. Lenny Henry’s reading of it is just as good as you would expect it to be, and I know my son will appreciate listening to it of a night. I’m sure this book will become a bedtime favourite in a lot of households, and rightly so.

If it's a terribly relaxing bedtime book you're looking for, then look no further than A Bed of Your Own by Mij Kelly and Mary McQuillan. For a completely different approach to bedtime, try This Is Not A Bedtime Story by Will Mabbitt and Fred Blunt. We think you'll also love Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown and Clement Hurd.
