Bonnie says the man has got crazy hair, but little does she know just how crazy. It's home to butterflies and cockatoos, dancers and balloons, and comb-eating bears. He tells her all about it, but she should be careful not to get too close...

Sometimes you come across books which make you wish you could rate them six, seven, eight out of five, or knock all your other reviews down a few stars, just to ensure everyone drops everything they're doing and reads the book. Little Beauty by Anthony Browne was one such book, and Crazy Hair is another. Neil Gaiman's beautiful imagination and interesting rhymes, and Dave McKean's stunning illustrations work in perfect harmony to create a delightful whole.

It's a simple idea, perfectly executed: a joke to a curious girl, which becomes a flight of fancy, and then increasingly real. I hope it comes from a real incident - I can imagine the delight on the face of the real Bonnie at seeing the book. There's something wonderful about a lie (although truth has its moments too), about changing the way people look at the world, about playing a game. Crazy Hair is just downright fun, inspiring and engaging. I love it.

Dave McKean's illustrations bear particular comment. Bookbag loved his work with David Almond in The Savage and of course all his other work too. There's something utterly original and thrilling about his pictures - he's such a talented artist and his style works wonderfully in children's books, with their mix of fantasy, adventure, wide-eyed wonder. I could look at the pictures in Crazy Hair endlessly.

Buy Crazy Hair. You'll love it. Highly recommended.

My thanks to the publishers for sending it to Bookbag.
