Summary: An undeniably cute tale of a family of mice. Young girls will love it, but parents might want to steer them towards something a little more substantial, despite the toy mouse that comes with it.

Lucky Wish Mouse's ten Tinies are playing at various games. The biggest Tiny can't find anyone to play with her, so she packs up her favourite things and runs away from home. Thankfully, Lucky Wish Mouse brings her home and has a great idea as to what they can all do together.

Best Friends is pitched at the very youngest book fans, particularly girls. The very simple tale keeps the plot ticking over constantly, but parents will be looking for something a bit more engaging to read together. The mice are sweet enough, and will no doubt become firm favourites for a few months, but slightly more fleshed out characters would make it more long-lasting. Clara Vulliamy's illustrations are pleasant enough - everything's bright, pink, dainty and sweet. Exactly what you want in this sort of book.

Much like the previous book in the series, it comes with a tiny toy mouse, with a promise that it's your "smallest, cheer-you-up friend". Bookbag still thinks it would be better if it was actually attached to the book, but until they lose it, they'll love it. Also like the previous book in the series, it comes with just a bit too prominent recommendation that you collect all the other books and mice in the series. As the target market are people who can't yet read, it's easy enough to ignore. I'm sure sales of Lucky Wish Mouse books will prove me wrong, but I always find such marketing more off-putting than encouraging. Let books stand on their own merit!

Despite that, there is a group of children who will love Best Friends. It's undeniably cute.

My thanks to the publishers for sending it to Bookbag.

Young girls wanting to read a sweet story with their parents will love A Present From Lulu by Caroline Uff. If mice are your thing, check out Wendel's Workshop by Chris Riddell and Little Mouse's Big Book of Fears by Emily Gravett.
