Summary: Brilliant continuation and summary of the series a Darker Shade of Magic, which continues at such a pace that it leaves you breathless but not wanting to stop. V E Schwab's beautiful, breath-taking writing leaves you gasping for more, and not sure of where you are when you do eventually put the book down. It is captivating, with a storyline that is easier to follow the Lord of the Rings, but don't be fooled, it is easier to be confused if you do not devote all your attention to this book.

The Darker Shade of Magic trilogy concludes by continuing with the story of Lila Bard, finding her way through the different Londons, one with magic, one without magic, a London where magic has near enough destroyed their world and the last London, which balances precariously on the edge of oblivion.

You'll have to forgive me, I have to try to write this without giving much away as I want each and every one of you to read the entire series from beginning to end, as it's just that good. Lila, a street urchin is plucked from obscurity in the previous books and finds her way into a world with magic. The conclusion from this book finishes off her awakening and discovery of the world. Do not be deceived by her long blonde locks and girlish charms, she is not to be trifled with, by any stretch of the imagination. Kell, who has been believed to be the last Antari, those with a certain type of magic, protector to the heir of HIS London, has to stop an almost demonic force from overtaking everything he has learnt to love. V E Schwab describes Kell beautifully, as someone who has no time for revelry and the capitalism of his world, but has adapted to it, for the love of his King and for the love of someone else. Romance is slowly woven throughout all of the trilogy but not in a hearts-and-flowers kind of way. More a blood-and-passion love; if they have to die, they'd die for each other. Beautiful but sinister at the same time.

The book itself is unlike other trilogies, where it takes forever to get back into the story. V E Schwab immerses you straight back into her world, with the first line of the book. The story itself peaks and troughs, but never leaves you without a sense of foreboding throughout the entire tale. Tension is rife in this and I would definitely not recommend reading this at night, on your own, as my partner walked in at one point and I fell off my chair. Suspense slowly builds throughout the entire trilogy and finally culminates and its final end, which is spectacular and well worth waiting three books for.

I can't suggest reading the first two books enough, but Of Bone and Thunder by Chris Evans for a story with a hint of dragons or Theft of Swords by Michael J Sullivan which follows the same lines as the Darker Shade of Magic.
