Bear is waiting for Goliath. That's Bear on the cover and it was what first drew me to this book. He looks so forlorn that I wanted to know what the problem was. He's not exactly forlorn, but he has been waiting at the bus stop since dawn and he might be getting just a little bit bored. He lies down (legs dangling down and tummy flat on the seat) and explains to everyone that Goliath is his best friend. Robin wanted to know if Goliath is as strong as Bear and Bear says that he is. He's smart too. He can count to eighteen. Bear's obviously been at the stop for quite a while as the spring flowers have fallen from the trees. He's there through the dark too - he just curls up and sleeps on the seat.

No matter what, Bear is convinced that Goliath is coming. Robin teases him with the thought that a passing dog might be Goliath and when the bus pulls up there's further disappointment. No Goliath. When winter comes Bear decides to hibernate under the seat and that's where he stays until the weather warms up again in spring. And then he hears a noise like a hand sliding slowly across paper. Goliath has arrived.

And suddenly it's completely clear why it's taken so long for Goliath to arrive. I'm not going to tell you any more than that he's truly magnificent and the two friends go off to play on the swings. It's a delightful story, told in simple, clear language and it highlights the meaning of true friendship which actually celebrates differences rather than allowing them to form a barrier. And Bear is so patient: he's prepared to wait for his friend, no matter what.

The pictures complement the text perfectly and despite the fact that they look to be very simple I was surprised at the extent to which I spotted little extras on each reading. There's Robin's nest building and raising of a family and the spider in his web - when he's not hiding in the rubbish bin. There's a good story and there's lots to chat about too. It's a delightful book and I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy to the Bookbag.
