If you are very lucky, the act of reading feels just like magic. You pick up a book and your imagination takes you on adventures you could never have in the real world. You should try and start this magic as early as possible and one way is to use interactive books, babies love to grab tabs or lift flaps. You may even stumble across a book all about numbers that provides this magical feeling for your child.

Join the Master Magician as he teaches you all about numbers, one through to ten. He will astound you with his tricks – flaps that reveal hidden secrets, impressive feats of paper and magical pop up elements. By the end of The World-Famous Book of Magical Numbers your child will not only have a better understanding of their numbers, but also be highly entertained.

Lift the flap books are extremely popular with publishers because babies love them, so much so that the flaps often fall off. More broken books, means more replacements sold – happy publisher! Quality ranges from those that fall to pieces with ease, or those that are built to last as long as possible. Magical is the latter as the pages are made of a robust card that is set to last for the long haul. Which is a good thing as the book is likely to get used a lot.

There are several factors that make this book an attractive one; the size to begin with. The A4 hardback format really invites the reader in. The large spread allows Goodreau's illustrations to flourish, they are simple and colourful, drawing the eye in to reveal the secrets held below. On each page there is a flap, pop up or a tag so that a child is never bored. These are all well-made and secure so that even the smallest and most vigorous of hands will have trouble ripping the book. This does lead to a slight issue as a couple of the activities require some oomph as the card sticks – fine for an adult, but a little complicated for a toddler.

The entire premise of Magical is simplicity itself, but there is beauty to behold. All the book is really doing is teaching numbers, but the theme of a magician and his act really holds the entire thing together; you feel like you have been invited to the show. This is a high quality pop-up book that will have a tactile baby/toddler demanding to read it over and over again. The look and feel of the thing is so impressive that you as the adult won't mind doing this yourself.

There are some great lift the flap books available; What's In The Witch's Kitchen? by Nick Sharratt is good fun for a cheeky child, whilst Zoom and Fly, Mr Croc by Jo Lodge is suitable for toddlers.
