I enjoy colouring: I find it relaxing and satisfying, but most colouring books have one big snag for me. When you've finished, what use is what you've done? If I'm investing quite a bit of time in producing something, I like it to be useful. I'm a bit of a puritan about such matters! It was therefore something of a relief when I found The Colouring Book of Cards and Envelopes: A Year of Celebrations - and before anyone starts to be pedantic about the title, you do get to colour the envelope too; in fact you colour the inside and the outside and all four faces of the cards. There are even some stickers for you to seal the envelope.

You start off with a New Year card and then move on to a couple of Valentine's Day cards, which did leave me wondering just a little... If some people have more than one lover, then there must be those who have more than one mother and more than one father! Easter is celebrated as are birthdays - for adults and children - as well as anniversaries. I particularly liked the congratulations cards and the thank yous - and there are a few miscellaneous cards at the end. One bears the legend Love, there are Thinking of You cards and Get Well. Short of needing a card for a bar mitzvah or someone moving house just about every occasion is catered for. There are 24 cards plus envelopes plus stickers in the book. With a £9.99 cover price that's good value.

The cards are high quality paper which stands up comfortably on its own and they remove cleanly from the book. There is a perforated line and I used a craft knife to square up the cards. The thickness of the paper means that there's no bleed-through from the reverse of the sheet. I found it most comfortable to remove the card from the book before colouring and work on my favoured surface, but you could work on some of the card whilst it's still in the book.

The results are pleasing and you can do as much or as little work on an individual card as you like. To completely colour a card and an envelope takes many hours of work, so they're not for mass distribution, but rather to send to someone who will appreciate the work that has gone into it and treasure the result. I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy to the Bookbag.

There are a couple of Christmas cards in the book, but if you need more we can recommend The Colouring Book of Cards and Envelopes - Christmas by Rebecca Jones.
