Princess Lolly is a little girl who is in charge of lots of grown ups, which in itself is a lovely start to any book. But Princess Lolly isn’t a happy bunny because… Johnny Bunny has gone missing! He left her room just as she was waking up, and she can’t find him anywhere! As anyone would be when a favourite pet has gone missing, she is so, so sad! So she sets hoards of policemen on the case to search the kingdom for him. They search high and low in the palace and the gardens but can’t seem to find what they’re looking for.

Johnny Bunny is an important member of the Palace family, as shown by his inclusion in a string of portraits that hang in the halls. And Princess Lolly is obviously important too, what with being the one in charge, so even though the police think they have better things to do, they still do as she says and search.

This is a funny story of mistaken identity, and because you’re let in on it early on you can laugh along at the silly policeman as they fail to do their job properly. The confusion is made even more explicit by an illustration which shows you what Princess Lolly is thinking… and what the Sergeant is thinking… and how the two don’t quite match up.

The illustrations in this book are adorable with cute details like Princess Lolly’s I Rule! badge and the varying facial hair designs of the coppers which somehow add to the image that they’re blustering, bumbling idiots. You’d be surprised what a scraggly beard can say about someone in this sort of book.

The book has lots of drama to it, as the police become more and more determined to track down Johnny Bunny, but never quite see what’s under their noses. Cue lots of shouting from young readers and stabbing of stubby fingers at the book. If this were a pantomime, the phrase He’s behind you! would be shouted again and again.

Overall, a fun story to read together, laugh at together, and enjoy together, with that great feeling that you’re just that little bit smarter than those silly grown ups. A winner.

Thanks go to the publishers for supplying this book.

This is not Princess Lolly's first outing! We adored The Jelly That Wouldn't Wobble by Angela Mitchell and Sarah Horne where she faced a slightly different problem, poor little lady.
