Summary: Nick Butterworth has written many books about Percy the Park Keeper and he's a character who has become a firm favourite with both my daughters. In his latest adventure you can find out what happens when Percy attempts to invent a new lawn mower as his old one is no longer up to doing the job. At first, it seems that Percy has a brilliant new invention but only time will tell if it is really as good as it seems.

At the start of 'Percy's Bumpy Ride', all the park animals are puzzled by the strange noises coming from Percy the Park keeper's workshop. They cannot guess what Percy is up to, but soon all is revealed when the doors open and Percy drives out on a spanking new machine. It's a new lawn mower and when Percy claims that it will help him fly around the park he is not joking. He and the animals roar around the park cutting the grass speedily and efficiently. However, before long the mower literally takes off and it looks as if they are all heading for a nasty accident until some very friendly sheep help to soften their landing. Percy decides that maybe his exciting new mower is perhaps not up to the job of keeping the park's grass in trim, but luckily, the sheep have given him another idea...

This is a lovely story based on a wonderful and well loved character. My daughter loved the crazy lawn mower that Percy created (complete with armchair, lots of levers and a propeller as well). She also found it most amusing the way the lawn mower suddenly took off with Percy and all of the animals on board, and she was very relieved when they all managed a soft landing – she was quite concerned that this would not be the case!

There is quite a lot of text on most pages which makes 'Percy's Bumpy Ride' a more substantial read than many picture books. However, the language used is very accessible making it ideal for sharing with newly confident readers, perhaps taking turns reading alternate pages. You do want to make sure though, that you also take time to enjoy the lovely illustrations that accompany the story. These have a very familiar feel if you have read the other stories featuring Percy and his friends and there is the usual understated humour in many of them. There is also one delightful fold out double sized page showing the wonderful view as Percy soars over the countryside in his magnificent machine.

I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy to the Bookbag.

'Percy's Bumpy Ride' is a highly entertaining and enjoyable read and a must for all young Percy fans. I would also suggest taking a look at Tales From Percy's Park: After the Storm also by Nick Butterworth
