King Colin has spent his fortune on a giant sweet machine, which he guzzles from each and every day. The entire kingdom has grown fat and lazy, except for Sir Scallywag. It's lucky somebody in the castle still has their wits about them, because Baron Greedyguts has heard all about their sweet machine, and he's coming to get it!

I was very excited to be getting a new book by Giles Andreae and Korky Paul, and I was not disappointed. This dream team have brought out another winner, sure to be a popular title with children and adults alike. It is a fabulous story for early readers; and its intricate illustrations, by Korky Paul who also illustrates the hugely popular Winnie the Witch series, are funny and so well detailed that an entire world opens up inside the book, allowing readers to spend a long time looking at each page in search of hidden gems.

Whilst rhyming books can on occasion feel a little forced in order to get both the story and rhymes across, this is not the case for Sir Scallywag. The tempo, story and rhymes are balanced beautifully well to create a captivating and entertaining piece from beginning to end.

The moral of the story is a nice one, encouraging readers not to sit around snaffling sweets all day, but to get out and do things instead. I think the way Sir Scallywag defeats the Baron Greedyguts is perfect – showing brain is often better than brawn in the end. Using a bit of toilet humour which always goes down well with the preschool and reception class market, it is also written by the person who brought us Pants, so how could it possibly go wrong? The answer is, it doesn't.

This book is an almost certain winner, and a wonderful romp to enjoy with your kids.

If it's a rhyming pants related tale you're after, why not try Don't Put Your Pants on Your Head, Fred by Caryl Hart and Leigh Hodgkinson? Or if you're looking for something by the same author, you could always go for Nat Fantastic and the Brave Knights of Old by Giles Andreae and Katharine McEwen.
