Edward K Michael has taken the brave step of laying out his spiritual journey for all to see. It is a deeply personal book and he's honest enough - genuine enough - to wonder if he would have taken a different path if he had known then what he knows now, but he's generous enough too to hope that people will find comfort in the supernatural manifestations he has seen. Before you begin reading you will need to accept that the book seems to have been written without editorial intervention: you are hearing the real man speak and what you will read is very close to stream of consciousness.

Micheal struck a chord with me when he spoke of events from his childhood or early life which for some reason stayed with him, as though they've been bookmarked and then resonate down the years, sometimes as many as seven years later. I know I've experienced that. He's particularly frank about drug use (opium) and his sex life and there's no suggestion that names have been changed to protect the, er, innocent! It would be his Christian faith and the help of sincere friends which stabilised him in his drug addiction. He's open about the method he used and the time it took to be clear of the drugs - and the debt which he owes his friends and his faith.

He's open too about visions which he's seen and whether or not this is something you believe in I do think that you have to respect the sincerity of the man. His recovery from drug addiction wasn't straightforward either, but he's honest about the relapses and the time he spent in prison. He's even generous enough to detail the benefits of prison life, but less so about some of the obvious sexual abuse which occurs.

There's no doubting Micheal's bravery and the depth of his faith. I just wish that he hadn't dashed into print with what's really just a first draft of his book. I was interested in many of the parallels which he drew with popular culture, but the lack of professional editing meant that it was frequently difficult to be sure about the precise point which he was making. Decent editing would have ensured that meaning was clear and would also have removed some repetitions. I'd like to thank the author for arranging for a copy of the book to be sent to the Bookbag. And don't you just love that cover?
