This collected edition contains two stories from Mudpuddle Farm: Pigs Might Fly! and Jigger's Day Off. Can a pig fly? Is Pintsize deluded or just a complete pain? What does a sheep dog do on his day off? Can the nearly-always-sensible dog actually be silly?
I loved this book. I found that Pigs Might Fly! (whilst marvellous) wasn't quite up to the standard of Alien Invasion! and Mums the Word but Jigger's Day Off was every bit as good.
Jigger's Day Off diverts from the standard pattern laid down in the three other books in that the goose, Albertine, has a somewhat reduced role. She still provides a stern intellectual foundation to the tale but she doesn't take centre-stage as she does in the other tales I've read.
I want to spend as long on my reviews for the Mudpuddle Farm books as I do for my other reviews but I would be in danger of writing more about each than Morpurgo does in the books themselves! These are beautifully crafted tales that work on multiple levels. Shoo Rayner's art work really brings the stories to life.
I cannot stress enough just how good these books are. They're a treasure trove for the emerging reader.
