Archie the rhino has a new favourite word - more! Whatever it is that Archie likes, he likes it a lot! He just wants more of everything; more stories, more bubbles in the bath, more glitter...but what happens when one day, Archie's idea of 'more' becomes a little too much to handle?

First of all, I do like the idea of a toddler rhino! He's a very sweet little thing too, with his tiny bump of a horn on the end of his nose and a range of stripy t-shirts. He is a typical toddler, however, and I soon found myself groaning inside at the memory of my own two monsters being small enough to have monosyllabic conversations. Archie is obsessed with having more. He's at that awful stage when he doesn't know how much is enough, that can be both hilarious and infuriating. In this particular story, the final over-the-top 'more' request is when he makes his own fancy dress costume for a birthday party. You'll have to bear with him on this point since I don't know any 2 or 3 year olds capable of making themselves quite such a fantastic costume...I suspect rather a lot of motherly intervention took place. Anyway, he goes a bit over the top in making himself a rocket costume and it is, of course, the biggest costume at the party, covered in pompoms and streamers and glitter.

The trouble with having such an amazingly enormous costume is that it stops poor Archie from actually having any fun with his friends and, eventually, sees him stuck in a hedge whilst everyone else is off to eat the birthday cake! Don't worry, they find him eventually and Archie decides that perhaps sometimes having more is too much, except when it comes to friends of course! I do like the final image of Archie and his friends all bouncing around happily on space hoppers! There's lots of fun, and you can throw yourself into some good, rousing shouts of 'MORE!' to really add to the atmosphere as you read!

All of the illustrations are energetic and colourful. There's a definite sense of busyness about Archie, in that way that toddlers have, and I love the pained and confused expressions of his parents through the story. My own small monster got very excited when we got to the page where Archie's dad is reading him stories since the covers of some of the books they've been reading are recognisable as stories that we have here at home and have read, which is a nice touch. I liked all the side characters, including the polar bear ice cream seller, and a really cute mouse dressed up as Wally from the Where's Wally books!

This is a sweet story, with a helpful discussion point, should you so wish to impress the idea of moderation upon your own cute toddler. Of course, it also works just fine for anyone as a fun bedtime read!
