Summary: Another excellent Lulu book, this time looking at what happens as Lulu progresses from nappies to using the toilet. It's ideal for any family who are heading towards or involved in potty training, and is also a wonderful pop-up book in its own right.

We've been here before, as Lulu introduced us to her shoes, clothes and Christmas. Here, she's kind enough to show us all that goes on with her loo, nappies and potty. As before, there are plenty of interesting flaps to lift and things to explore.

I'm a big fan of the Lulu books. They take an integral part of growing up, and present them in a matter-of-fact way. Lulu's Loo isn't preachy or pushy, it just shows that Lulu sometimes wears a nappy, sometimes wears big girl knickers, sometimes wees in a potty, sometimes in a toilet, and sometimes has accidents, but that's alright. Kids get to help Lulu do up her nappy, unroll the toilet paper, lift her skirt to see her knickers, and lift the toilet lid to see her shiny golden wee. If you're tutting disapprovingly, stop it right now. Everything's perfectly pitched and perfectly appropriate. There's an ideal blend of interest, amusement and information.

There are, of course, a million and one possible ways to get your kids from nappies to using the toilet. Whichever method works best for you, Lulu's Loo will fit nicely alongside that. It's fun enough (particularly due to the more interesting than usual flaps) to be read at any time, rather than as a message book. It simply sows the seeds that this is a thing that happens, rather than suggesting the young readers must do things a certain way.

Ailie Busby's illustrations are lovely. Lulu's a real cutie and her world, with plenty of toys and animals dotted around, feels delightfully homely for toddlers. The text is sparse, clear and direct, with not a word out of place. The various things to play with on each page are the stars, but text and illustrations ably support these and it makes for a superb whole. Highly recommended.

My thanks to the publishers for sending it to Bookbag.

Peek-a-Poo - What's In Your Nappy? by Guido van Genechten is another excellent potty training book, with plenty of poo to chuckle at. Have You Seen My Potty? by Mij Kelly is also a great choice.
