Looking for a sure-fire way to intimidate the competition during a job interview? Just sit in the waiting room perusing the oh, so subtly titled How to Win, with the book tilted at the optimum angle to allow everyone to see the bold heading on the cover. Of course, if more than one candidate is reading the same book, difficulties may ensue...

Dr Rob Yeung, coach and Business psychologist, aims to show his readers How to Win in a variety of situations: The argument, the pitch, the race and the job. As with so many books in this genre, the author promises that this book is different because it contains proven techniques. Whilst I initially balked at this statement, I must confess to being more than impressed with the fact that it was actually backed up with a long list of references and first-hand accounts demonstrating how the methodology works in practice.

The book is aimed at those who are unhappy in the workplace for a range of reasons. They may feel that they are constantly overlooked for promotion, or struggling to keep up with ever changing demands in the job. Whatever the underlying problem, Dr Yeung uses a mixture of written exercises and real-life examples to show how those with similar problems have managed to overcome their obstacles and move forward.

Yeung writes in an easy going, conversational manner, which feels like a personal consultation. The only problem I had with his approach to writing was the strange, poetic sort of way he describes people. For example, he talks about Anna, who has the energy of a skittish doe, lean, boyishly bombastic Alan and perpetually polo clad Bryce. I ended up so distracted reading the odd descriptions, that most of the time I missed the point of what was being said.

The exercises in the book are simple and easy to complete, with the answers revealing a lot about the inner workings of the mind, strengths and weaknesses. Readers will benefit most from How to Win by using the information gleaned from the exercises, reviewing the lessons learned and making an active effort to improve. This is not a book designed to be read from cover to cover. Application of the material will glean the best results, and perhaps, the long-awaited promotion.

What's Stopping You?: Why Smart People Don't Always Reach Their Potential and How You Can by Robert Kelsey is another self-help manual containing plenty of food for thought, that readers of How to Win may enjoy.
