Summary: There's a party at the farmyard, and it's going to be fancy dress. A flap filled laugh-fest as we discover which animals are hiding behind the disguises. A Pirate Pig? A Wizard Sheep and what's this? A Superhero Duck? Nick Sharratt's new book combines all those toddler/pre-schooler favourites: flaps to lift, short, sing-song stanzas and lots of parent/child participation by way of animal sounds.

There's a party at the farmyard and it's going to be fancy dress. Let's turn the pages together and find out who has come dressed as what!

Nick Sharratt is already a big hit in our house. We have the entire Usbourne set of books that include Mouse Moves House and Ted's Shed etc. so any new book from his excellent pen (Sharratt's illustrations are joyfully recognisable at thirty paces) is always eagerly anticipated. Fancy Dress Farmyard was no exception.

There's not very much to say about this book other than the pages were sturdy and well devised – the flap itself was a cutaway page and therefore firmly attached to the book. Sensible really, given that most children of the age at which this book is aimed, do not appear to know their own strength! It was also, as expected, brightly and beautifully coloured with bold, primary shades of blues and reds and every sunny, vibrant hue in between. Oh how we do love a colourful book.

In summary, we liked it a lot and therefore must recommend it to you; it was a little too brief for my 4 year old (which meant repeated readings in the realm of around ten in a row, in spite of how I begged to be allowed to read something else) but lots of fun and laughter was had by all.

For further reading and also by Nick Sharratt, we think you should take a look at What's In The Witch's Kitchen? because it has terrific and slightly ingenious paper engineering in the form of flaps, pop-ups and pull tabs and will keep your little one amused for hours. Would you like something similar to this book for Christmas? Or, along similar lines for little fingers that like opening things, you may like to try What's in the Fridge? by Gaby Goldsack and Jo Moon though honestly unless you keep your eyes peeled, you will find yourself picking up little cardboard food shapes for about a week.

Lastly, we at Bookbag would like to extend our thanks to the kind people at Alison Green Books for sending us this copy to review.
