Explore and Draw Patterns is a beautifully presented interactive workbook designed to spark creativity and imagination. The appeal of the subject matter is universal; everyone loves to doodle, so the book would be equally enjoyable for adults or children.
Some of the pages are virtually blank; albeit for a short remit at the top of the page with ideas for drawing themes. Such themes include creating repetitive designs by drawing round everyday objects, making a spotty dotty pattern or drawing a zigzag pattern. On other pages, the pattern has already been started, but the reader is invited to finish it and colour it in. The book also includes optical illusions, games and observation exercises, all based on the theme of patterns.
The paper used in the book is high quality and the pages are quite thick and almost card-like, which allows the reader to use a variety of art media without fear of ink or paint bleeding through and spoiling the next page. Would-be artists are encouraged to explore different colours and shapes and the emotions associated with them.
It is easy to lose oneself in this sort of book and it makes for a perfect rainy day activity. It is also useful for helping very young children, or children with special needs, with their fine motor coordination skills. It would also be the ideal book to keep by the phone for something to keep yourself occupied when waiting on 'hold' for more than a few minutes...
Explore and Draw Patterns would make a lovely gift for a child of any age and is an enjoyable way to encourage art skills and creative thinking. Once completed, the book becomes a precious keepsake to treasure. Many thanks to the publishers for my review copy.
