If I'm going out for the day to enjoy myself I want my dogs with me. It's not just that I love their company, but I don't like leaving them in the house for too long. Ideas for days out are always welcome. It's good to know about pubs that are not going to frown as you get to the door and if we're heading to the coast I like to know which beaches we can use and if there are any restrictions. Pubs, Beaches and Days Out aims to fill a hole! How does it do?
The book is divided into three sections. Pubs are first, then beaches and finally days out. As with other books from www.dogfriendly.co.uk I can't help but think that the content could have been better organised. I live in Yorkshire, so let's assume that I'm planning a day out with the dogs. We'll start by planning our day out. Yorkshire is divided into North, South, East and West and they're not together, but sorted in with other counties and countries. I think we'll go to the Chevin Forest Park – I know it well and can confirm that it's a wonderful place for a long walk with the dogs. All the information I need to know is there – whether the dogs need to be on leads, any restrictions and details of parking arrangements. Excellent. Now, how about a pub for lunch?
Ah, now we have to change our way of thinking because Yorkshire suddenly becomes a single county with pubs in Yorkshire, North first, then Yorkshire, South and finally Yorkshire, West. If you were going to East Yorkshire with your dogs then it looks like a dry day – and I don't mean the weather! So how's the planning for our Chevin Park trip going? Well there is one pub – The Royalty – but the address is insufficient for you to locate it unless you already know the area. That's a pity, but there is another pub in the centre of Otley – The Junction – only it's in the section which covers Yorkshire, South, despite being so far into Yorkshire, West that it's within spitting distance of Yorkshire, North.
Yorkshire is shown as one county for beaches too, but confusingly opens with three beaches which are not, apparently in any specific part of the county, before we move onto the East Riding of Yorkshire (which is where the first three beaches should be). The information given about the beaches is clear – if there are restrictions at certain time of year then the dates are given and if dogs have to be on leads this is stated.
This book could be such a treasure trove – I've already planned a couple of days out – to Harewood House and Castle Howard – and it's such a pity that the inconsistent organisation of the information makes it infuriating to use. An index showing towns would help considerably.
If you're planning a longer trip then you might appreciate Dog Friendly Hotels and Dog Friendly Camping and Caravan Sites although books suffer from muddled organisation.
