I hope that children are not as fearful of going to the dentist as used regularly to be the case, but even those who are unworried will benefit from this useful book directed mainly at the five to ten age group, although I'm sure that older children will find it of interest too. The ABC format might suggest a younger age range, but don't be fooled!
It's been cleverly done - we start off with an appointment rather than a problem to take you to the dentist and then a bib to save your shirt. The first suggestion of a difficulty comes with 'cavity' and even then it's clear that something can be done before we get any pain coming into the picture: If the hole gets deep enough, a cavity can cause pain. We move quickly on to the dental chair (just a little bit of fudging there, I thought!) and then the examination itself. You'll see why the dentist uses a mirror and a bright light.
We meet the hygienist and the orthodontist. There's a good range of people included too. We discover what instruments are used and find out quite a bit about our teeth and our mouths. It's all illustrated with cheerful pictures. It might not look like the place you want to go for fun, but there's certainly no hint that it's threatening or difficult. The question of pain, or bleeding isn't ducked but dealt with sensibly and in a matter of fact way. It's a useful book to have in a dentist's waiting room, a school, a library or at home. It can only help with visits to the dentist.
The book is written by an American but I found nothing which made me feel that it would not work in the UK or elsewhere. Common sense and information are universal.
We've also seen ABC Doctor by Ziefert and Murphy and this has all the same attributes and we're delighted to recommend that too.
I'd like to thank the publishers fro dropping this book into the Bookbag.
If this book appeals then we think that you might also enjoy A Horrid Factbook: Horrid Henry's Bodies by Francesca Simon and Tony Ross. For a slightly weird alphabet, try Z is for Moose by Kelly L Bingham and Paul O Zelinsky.
